Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the U.S. It is designed to enlarge (and in some cases lift) the breasts and is most commonly performed for women who are seeking to improve their breast size, symmetry, or "body balance." The age range of women seeking breast augmentation runs from 18 to 70 years-old.

An expert in plastic surgery procedures, Dr. Mausner performs a large number of breast augmentation surgeries using state-of-the-art techniques. Dr. Mausner believes that the most natural results in breast augmentation can be obtained by individualizing the procedure to your specific body type and desires. Named one of the "Top Plastic Surgeons in Washington, D.C." by Washingtonian Magazine, Dr. Mausner has provided expert commentary on breast augmentation surgery both on television (ABC 7 News WJLA) and in newspapers (Washington Post and Montgomery Business Journal).

About Your Consultation
Your plastic surgeon will completely explain each and every procedure in great detail. He will review with you all of your options for breast augmentation surgery. The finest possible results begin with a caring and thoughtful initial consultation.

All of the pre-operative instructions will be given and explained to you so that you feel completely comfortable with the procedure. Your breast augmentation surgery will be performed at Suburban Hospital, where the best care will be provided to you.

What About Scars?
Dr. Mausner is able to perform breast augmentation in most patients with minimal scarring. Although there are a variety of incisions that can be used for breast augmentation surgery, Dr. Mausner most frequently utilizes an incision around the nipple (peri-areolar). This extremely short scar, placed where the dark edge of the nipple meets the lighter color of the skin, offers the best place to "hide" the scar. In the majority of breast enhancement patients, this incision is barely visible after 3 - 6 months.

What Implants Are Used?
Because it is of utmost importance to obtain the most natural look possible, Dr. Mausner will help you choose the right implant as well as incision site for your surgery. Many different types of breast implants are currently available. Dr. Mausner exclusively uses implants from the Mentor Company because of their quality implants, patient support and on-going research initiatives.

The most common breast implants used in the United States are saline (salt water) filled. Cohesive gel silicone breast implants are available when your needs fit certain parameters. Cohesive gel implants are preferable when your breasts are very small, when saline implants have caused ‘rippling of the skin’ or you have developed scar tissue around a previously placed implant.

Dr. Mausner will assess you to determine the size, shape and type of breast implant which would best suit your particular needs. In general, round implants are preferable to "anatomical" shaped implants. The anatomical implants have many disadvantages because of their shape and texturing, often causing noticeable rippling, a feeling of firmness and can shift, creating an abnormal appearance. Round breast implants, when placed under the muscle, feel and look more natural than the anatomical implants. One of the more recent advances in breast implants has been the use of "expandable" breast implants that can be inflated to the final volume weeks after surgery. These specialized implants can be used to correct breast asymmetry and gives Dr. Mausner the ability to adjust the final size at a later date.

We believe that the best breast augmentation surgery results can be obtained when the procedure, implant type, location and size are individualized to meet your specific body type and desires.

Where Are the Implants Placed?
Although the implant may be placed just beneath the breast tissue (sub-mammary), Dr. Mausner most frequently places the implants in a deeper location under both the breast tissue and the chest wall muscle (sub-pectoral position) to obtain the most natural results. The exact placement of the breast implant depends on many factors. Generally the subpectoral placement is the favored location. The sub-mammary placement (under the breast tissue) is useful for those women who have more sag (ptosis) to the breast and want to minimize external scarring. If your breasts sag considerably, a breast lift can be performed with an augmentation or by itself. In discussion with you, Dr. Mausner uses his expertise and artistic sense to decide the positioning and exact size of the implant at the time of the surgery.

How Long Does Breast Augmentation Surgery Take?
The breast augmentation surgery will take about 1 1/2 hours. You will spend time in the care of the recovery room nurses, and will be discharged home when you have met all health and safety criteria. Postoperative instructions will be provided to you.

And Follow Up?
You will be seen in our office within 3-4 days after the breast augmentation surgery. Pain is usually well controlled with the medication provided to you. Plan to take about a week off from work, although you can drive a car about 4-5 days after surgery. All your routine follow-up care is included in the original surgical fee and covers one year of routine visits.

Will my ability to breast feed be affected?
It is very likely that you will not be able to breast feed following any breast augmentation surgery. However, it has been reported by many of our patients with breast implants that they have been successful in nursing their babies.

Do breast implants increase my risk of getting or detecting cancer?
There is no evidence linking implants and breast cancer. Recent studies have shown that the stage of breast cancer detection in women with implants appears to be identical to the overall population.

Will augmentation surgery make asymmetrical breasts more symmetrical?
If your breasts have slightly different shapes before surgery, they may remain slightly different after surgery; however every attempt is made to make you as symmetrical as possible as concerns breast volume. Breast shape asymmetry may require an additional procedure.

Will I lose any sensation in my nipples or skin?
Nerves that supply skin or nipple sensation may be cut or bruised during breast augmentation surgery. Although it doesn't happen routinely, nerve damage can occur no matter how carefully the surgery is performed. If sensory loss occurs, the nerves can take up to 2 years to recover. In rare situations the sensation can be lost permanently.

How soon can I return to normal activity?
It is recommended that you take off work for about 1 week. You are allowed to shower 2 days after breast augmentation surgery and drive a car within 3 - 5 days.

How will implants affect a mammogram?
You should alert the mammography technician to the fact that you have implants. Special techniques will be used and extra views of the breast may be required to see as much of the breast tissue as possible.

Can mammography cause implants to burst?
Because the breast is compressed during mammography, it is possible for an implant to rupture. However, this is rare.
